The 2017 New Stamps Issue programme has been issued by An Post.
It is of course provisional. Christians, particuarly Catholics, will be pleased to see that a stamp will be issued to mark the centenary of the “Apparations” in Fatima, Portugal.
The 150th Anniversary of the Death of Thomas F Meagher will be marked in June. This MIGHT be a joint issue with the United States of America.
Meagher was a leader of the Young Ireland movement.Sentenced to death but commuted to transportation to Australia, he made his way to USA and was the Commander of The Irish Brigade in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the War, he became Governor of Montana and died in (possibly) mysterious circumstances in 1867.
Meagher is also credited with the design of the flag (originally Orange, White and Green) which would become the National Flag of Ireland.
Surprisingly maybe a stamp will be issued to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Death of Che Guevara. This has passed the Selection Committee but might prove controversial. Personally I have no problem with it. After all, Che ….Ernesto Che Guevara Lynch is “one of our own” and a descendant from the Irish diaspora in Argentina.
